Mr. Alexander is the former Canadian Ambassador to Afghanistan and Deputy Special Representative of the UN Secretary General for Afghanistan.

He holds a BA from McGill University and an MA from Balliol College, Oxford University. He joined the Canadian Foreign Service in 1991, where he was Deputy Director responsible for bilateral relations with Russia and Assistant to the deputy minister of foreign affairs. From 1993-1996 he was Second Secretary at the Canadian Embassy in Moscow, where he was also Minister Counsellor from 2000-2003. He was appointed Ambassador of Canada to Afghanistan in 2003, a post he held until 2005.

He was chosen as a Young Global Leader by the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland in 2005.
