You haven't heard "angry" until you hear a member of the Italian Coast Guard tear into an absentee captain.
The grounding of the Costa Concordia, a massive, 4,300-passenger Carnival cruise ship, has dominated headlines this week, in no small part due to the captain of the ship, Francesco Schettino, abandoning ship before an evacuation had been completed. He's to appear in court on suspicion of manslaughter, and as the death toll rises – the latest reports have the official number at 11, although 29 people remain missing – Schettino's attracted his fair share of public ire. Not helping his case is this audio recording of his phone conversation with the Italian Coast Guard, recorded while he was aboard a lifeboat. In the recording, the coast guard official demands that Schettino head back to the ship to complete the evacuation, but Schettino soundly declines to do so, saying he's coordinating efforts from the life raft. It's a harrowing conversation, to say the least, as you can practically hear the coast guard official's face turn red over Schettino's intransigence. This is certainly not the finest hour in Italian maritime history, but
