At just seven millimetres long, Paedophryne amauensis is very, very small.
American researchers have discovered the world's smallest vertebrate, a miniscule frog less than one-third of an inch long, in the wilds of New Guinea. The frog, named Paedophryne amauensis, is a brownish-black amphibian that's not even half as big as a dime. It takes the title of smallest thing with a spine from an Indonesian fish called Paedocypris progenetica that measured about eight millimetres – about a millimetre bigger than the frog. The little amphibians live among fallen leaves that make up much of the New Guinean rainforest floor, and make a high-pitched sound similar to an insect, although they are far more adorable than any gross bug could ever be.
