Afghan Prison

Afghan Investigators Accuse US of Abuse

A new report has emerged about America's main prison in Afghanistan.

In a swift change of heart, Afghanistan’s President Hamid Karzai has asked the United States to turn over full control of its main prison near the Bagram Air Base within a month. Just last week, Karzai and the United States had been in talks to gradually transfer responsibility for the prison over a two year time period. Yesterday, Afghan investigators accused the U.S. military of abusing prisoners at the site, which currently holds 3,000 detainees. In their report, investigators said interviewees claimed they were subject to prolonged detentions, strip searches, light deprivation and freezing cold conditions. The centre, which was opened in 2009, is currently jointly run by U.S. and Afghan militaries and holds hundreds of suspected Taliban and al-Qaida members.
