Toronto's Archbishop will become Canada's 16th cardinal ever.
There’s a new cardinal in the house, this time hailing from Toronto. Pope Benedict has named Toronto Archbishop Thomas Christopher Collins a cardinal, making him the third living person to hold this post in Canada and the only one living outside the province of Quebec. The 64-year-old archbishop will be eligible to vote on the selection of the next pope should anything happen to Benedict in the next 16 years. Collins reportedly heard about the honour after he got a note on his BlackBerry to call the office of the pontiff. He will retain his title in Toronto while serving various posts for the church in Rome.
