Frustrated with the 85-year-old incumbent, Youssou Ndour says he is fulfilling his supreme patriotic duty.

Grammy award-winning musician Youssou Ndour made a surprising announcement on his private radio and television stations last night: He is going to run for the presidency in Senegal. The music legend and media mogul, who has repeatedly criticized the country's ruling party, says he will be a candidate in the Feb. 26 election. He will face off against 20 other candidates and incumbent President Abdoulaye Wade. Eighty-five-year-old Wade has become controversial of late, after using a loophole in local electoral laws to run for a third term despite a constitutional two-term maximum. The relatively stable democracy saw violent protests in response to that move and frequent power cuts.
