Raffi vs. Don Cherry

Raffi Takes on Don Cherry, Fighting in NHL

Our five-year-old selves are utterly conflicted over who to side with here.

Raffi Cavoukian, one of the world's most beloved children's entertainers, has had enough with hockey commentator Don Cherry's defence of pugilism. Before Saturday night's Hockey Night in Canada broadcast, Raffi tweeted to his followers that they should hit the mute button on Cherry's Coach's Corner segment during the first intermission of the Toronto Maple Leafs' loss at the hands of the Vancouver Canucks. If Raffi's followers did as much, they would have missed one of Cherry's finer pronouncements on religion, declaring "25th. Baby Jesus. Born." He also urged viewers to never forget that Christmas is about the birth of Christ, even if Jesus was probably born sometime in the spring, and that it's next to impossible to forget about Christmas these days. All that's sort of beside the point from Raffi's stance, which is that, according to the Vancouver Sun, that Cherry's boorishness sets a terrible example for kids and that the CBC should see about rectifying that. Raffi also said that the NHL ought to do more to ban fighting and hits to the head, but we're guessing that Cherry's only response would have been along the lines of wondering why the heck Raffi Torres has suddenly had a change of heart over violence in hockey.
