A leaked email reveals the Canadian Food Inspection Agency sees itself as "at war" with the scientists investigating the health of Canadian salmon.
Federal investigations into the infectious salmon anemia (ISA) virus sparked a charged response after a government email was leaked to the public. The Canadian Food Inspection Agency manager for British Columbia wrote in a private email that the “battle” had been won over the ISA investigation and that the “PR tide” was turning in his favour. His enemy? Science. The CFIA manager was writing about the results of salmon expert Fred Kibenge, who detected the virus in sockeye smolts in a study published in October. At the federal hearing, Kibenge and another scientist testified they felt ostracized after detecting the virus and felt intimidated within their departments. Salmon-gate is expected to end in late June when the inquiry's final report is released.
