Rae on Reserve

Rae to Harper: You Should Have Been Here

The Liberal leader is the second to visit the impoverished Attawapiskat community after Turmel's visit last month.

At the conclusion of his visit to the First Nations community of Attawapiskat, Bob Rae had no kind words for Prime Minister Harper. The Liberal leader, who was visiting the reserve with aboriginal affairs critic Carolyn Bennett, said Harper showed a lack of respect towards the community by failing to visit them himself. Earlier on his trip, he also called the reserve Canada’s “Third World” where basic groceries like condensed milk and diapers could cost a family upwards of $250. Rae said Harper’s appointment of a third party manager to oversee the reserve reflected a continued “colonial attitude” as he chided the prime minister for abandoning the Kelowna accord and other investments into aboriginal communities.
