Canadian Allegedly Led Attempt to Smuggle Gadhafi's Son to Mexico

Al-Saadi Gadhafi had been a pro soccer player and head of Libyan special forces before fleeing for Niger.

Mexican officials say they've arrested a Canadian woman who had attempted to smuggle one of Moammar Gadhafi's sons into Mexico. Al-Saadi Gadhafi, a former professional soccer player and commander of Libya's special forces, fled Libya for Niger as his father's regime unravelled in September. He had been liaising with a group of people, including one Cynthia Vanier, as well as a Danish man and a Mexican woman, who had opened bank accounts and bought property in Mexico meant to be used by Gadhafi under an assumed Mexican identity. Mexican authorities allege that Vanier was the ringleader of the group and had been in extensive contact with the Gadhafi family regarding getting them out of Libya. She is currently under house arrest and facing charges of falsifying documents.
