Tabloid chain bringing McCarthyism into the 21st century.
This Sun vs. CBC battle shows no signs of ending anytime soon, as the Sun's Kris Sims is now reporting on the fact that five CBC employees follow a Twitter account called @Scum_Tv that makes fun of the tabloid chain/ cable news channel. (We wish we could endorse @Scum_Tv, but it's not exactly high-minded satire.) Now, we're assuming that the Sun chain's editors are guessing that their readership has no idea how the Twitter works. Hopefully, that's not the case (although the comments on the story suggest otherwise). If so, then we're in big trouble, as we follow the Taliban and Kim Kardashian on Twitter. Heck, King Ezra Levant himself follows Al Gore, Ishrad Manji, Terry Milewski, and far-right, anti-immigrant Dutch politican Geert Wilders, but we're not jumping to say that he counts any of those people as ideological sympathizers. All of which is to say that who you follow on Twitter has little bearing on who you are, first and foremost, as a citizen, and secondly, as a journalist. Presenting someone's Twitter connections in a way that suggests that they've compromised their objectivity smacks of insecurity – and in this case, it's all over an unfunny parody account with a pitiful 74 followers.
