Atlantic Witnessing Birth of New Island?

The Canary Islands could be gaining a new member as an underwater volcanic eruption keeps on chugging.
Volcanic activity in the Canary Islands appears to be creating Earth's newest island in the Atlantic ocean. Lava and gases have been bubbling up to the surface of the Atlantic about three miles off the coast of El Hierro, one of the Canary Islands. While the ongoing eruption has put a dint in El Hierro's typically brisk tourism trade, the geological phenomenon could be spewing enough to material to form an entirely new island, or, failing that, a healthy addition to El Hierro's southern coast. (Which, in turn, could generate even more tourism dollars once activity's settled down a bit). The eruption has so far remained underwater, thus avoiding the release of a giant ash cloud. But it has caused numerous tremors felt around the islands, including one measuring 4.6 on the Richter scale that could be felt some 100 kilometres away.
