Are things getting hot at the Durban climate conference, or is just the planet?
The decade from 2001-2011 was the hottest on record since 1850, tying the decade from 2000-2010, according to the UN World Meteorological Organization. The findings were released at the UN climate conference in Durban, South Africa. So far, 2011 has ranked as the 10th warmest year in the past century and a half, despite the effects of the La Nina weather system, which usually cools temperatures worldwide. According to the WMO, not one country on the planet had a mean temperature from the past decade that was lower than their average temperatures between 1961 and 1990. Forty per cent of countries broke national heat records in the past decade, compared to just 15 per cent of countries that did so 1991-2000. The WMO says that this proves global warming is indeed taking place, but they would say that, wouldn't they?
