Toronto School Gets Its Balls Back

PTA votes to let kids be kids.

A Toronto school's ban on basketballs and tennis balls in the schoolyard has been revoked after parents put a hold on the measure that attracted ridicule from around the world. Earl Beatty Public School's parent teacher association decided last night that the ban, which was put in place after a parent was struck in the head with a ball and concussed, ought to be put on hold while they examine other ways to make the schoolyard safe. The ban has actually been around for a decade, but was only first enforced earlier this month after the concussion. The ban sought to make the school's cramped schoolyard safer for students and parents, but inadvertently exposed them to more than a few jokes from the Canadian media and even Saturday Night Live. If students want to bring harder balls, such as footballs or soccer balls, to school, they must now get permission from teachers.
