Hands up if you had Pat Martin as the first MP to drop the f-bomb on Twitter. Oh, that's a lot of you...
Pat Martin, an NDP MP from Winnipeg, is never afraid to speak his mind, and often in the most colourful of language (by politician standards, at least). It's why he's endeared himself to reporters on the Hill, and also why he's caused a stir on the Twitter, as he went on an f-word-laden rant on the social networking site yesterday over the antics of the Harper government. After the Conservatives voted to shut down debate on a bill related to the budget yesterday – a practice they've grown to love as a majority government - Martin aired his frustration. "This is a fucking disgrace ... closure again. And on the budget! There’s not a democracy in the world that would tolerate this jackboot shit,” tweeted the MP. "For gods sake. In these uncertain economic times, don't you think our parliament should be debating our federal budget? Some due diligence?" Good questions! Anyhow, when one user Tweeted back "Sad how a foul mouth socialist capitalizes 'Budget' but not 'god'," Martin simply replied: "fuck you." Lower-case. Nice touch. Well, so much for that civility pledge that the MPs took before this session of Parliament began, but we will say that Martin's mini-tirade was pretty refreshing to hear amid all the bromides and talking points politicians usually post to Twitter. And at least he didn't delete the tweets, like so many others would have.
