Could the Maple Leafs be Bought by (gasp) Americans?

Sure! It's not like being owned by Canadians has done them any good.
According to the Toronto Star, an American private equity firm is interested in buying a majority share of the Toronto Maple Leafs. Providence Equity Partners is apparently looking to buy up the 80 per cent share of Maple Leafs Sports and Entertainment that's currently owned by the Ontario Teachers' Pension Plan. MLSE also owns the Toronto Raptors and Toronto FC. No offers have been made, but such a purchase would likely exceed a billion dollars. For a team whose general manager, head coach, and star forward are all American, we suppose it wouldn't be too much of a stretch for the organization to go fully Yankee, too. We mean, it's not like they've had tons of success in the last 40 or so years under Canadian ownership. Oh, and Rogers Communications is also apparently interested. Should that bid go through, it'll add just another reason for us non-Leafs fans to boo any and everything the team does.
