After seven months of fighting and empty promises of peace, President Bashar al-Assad refuses to step down.
The death toll in Syria's anti-government uprising has surpassed 3,500, according to the United Nations. After more than seven months of protests, Syrian President Bashar al-Assad shows no sign of stepping aside or easing his crackdown, despite pledging just last week to follow an Arab League plan to bring a peaceful end to the uprising. Sixty people have been killed since then, with most of those deaths coming in the city of Homs, which has been the heart of the uprising. Countless thousands have been arrested, while numerous reports have suggested that Syrian soldiers have carried out rape campaigns in the city.
