Stanley Park's Hollow Tree Reopens

Finally, a reason to visit Vancouver.
Vancouver's famed Hollow Tree has risen once again in Stanley Park, five years after a devastating wind storm caused millions in damages to the iconic park. The Hollow Tree, a 700-year-old red cedar that had been naturally hollowed out, had attracted fleets of visitors to its corner of the park for nearly as long as Vancouver has existed until the storm knocked it and dozens of other trees over in 2006. But the trunk has now been returned home and is standing upright, albeit with a giant metal beam underground to give it support. Twelve metres in circumference and 13 metres tall, the tree was re-opened to the public yesterday after a fundraising campaign generated more than $200,000 for the tree's restoration.
