Mexican Drug War

Anonymous Threatens Mexico's Zetas Cartel

Release our member or face an information war, say the online activists. The Zetas are reportedly quaking in their blood-covered boots.

Anonymous, the, well, anonymous group of online hacktivists, have picked a battle with one of the most deadly organizations on the planet: The Zetas cartel of Mexico. Anonymous issued a video warning the cartel, which the Drug Enforcement Agency considers to be the most violent in Mexico (just read the Wikipedia page on them), that they must release an Anonymous member they're holding captive or the hackers will release the names of police, journalists, government officials, and more that are in the Zetas' pocket. Anonymous says it will carry out its vengeance this Friday if their compatriot isn't released (or if he's killed). While we're usually cheering on Anonymous when they're taking on bankers or the U.S. or Syrian government or what have you, we're a little ill-at-ease over what to make of this threat. It could put the lives of many at risk if Anonymous actually does release such a list, adding to a body count that's somewhere near 43,000 from the last five years alone, so there's that. Maybe it's just because we watched Sin Nombre last night, but why can't we all just get along? Oh, right, the drugs thing.
