Assad: Stay out or you'll break the Middle East, tectonically.
Syrian President Bashar al-Assad publicly thanked Russia this morning for shielding him from international sanctions over his brutal treatment of protestors. Earlier this month, Russia (along with China) vetoed a U.N. Security Council resolution condemning the regime for its attack on some 3,000 civilian protestors. Syrian state news is now also reporting that Syria will begin re-writing its constitution in a meeting on Monday, as part of an effort to defuse protests against the government following a violent weekend. In an interview with the Sunday Telegraph, al-Assad warned other nations that any intervention on the ground would bring an “earthquake” to the region, a remark Turkey surely found tasteful and appropriate.
