Gun Registry

Quebec To Refuse Ottawa's Order To Destroy Registry Records

The province returns fire, claiming sovereignty over data compiled by provincial and municipal police forces.

A bill that will kill the long-gun registry is before the House of Commons, and while it might sail through the House without much serious opposition, that's not the case when it comes to getting Quebec to follow suit. The government of country's second most populous province has indicated it will not comply with the bill's provisions that would force each police force to delete the records on gun-owners that were compiled as part of the registry. Furthermore, the province is also telling Ottawa that it needs resources (read: moolah) to start up their own gun registry once the federal one is thoroughly dead. The federal government says that Quebec can't do this, as they say the data is all under the feds' purview. Quebec says that since the provincial and municipal police forces collected the data, it belongs to them. The federal NDP and Liberals have also sided with Quebec (get used to hearing that phrase) over it, saying destroying all the records that came along withe registry a "$2-billion bonfire."
