Donald Tusk has officially become the first prime minister in Poland to be re-elected since the fall of communism 22 years ago.
It’s Groundhog Day in Poland, for once. The people finally found a prime minister they could stand behind (or at least tolerate) as Donald Tusk emerged triumphant on Monday. The centre-right leader of the Civic Platform party won 39 per cent of the vote, with rival Jaroslaw Kaczynski’s Law and Justice party receiving 30 per cent and the new, progressive Palikot’s Support Movement party taking 10 per cent. Tusk is expected to form another coalition with the Peasants’ Party and to invite other parties to join in. Poland has weathered the European financial crisis incredibly well since Tusk took power, and has not dipped into a recession in his four years in office.
