“Birthday weeks” are somewhat less obnoxious when you’re 80 and a Nobel laureate.

Archbishop Desmond Tutu may have turned 80 on Friday, but that hasn’t stopped him from enjoying a good party. The South African “people’s priest” and former anti-apartheid activist celebrated his milestone birthday over three days, including a musical event attended by Bono and a dancing session with a church choir. Tutu’s friend and fellow Laureate the Dalai Lama was expected to attend and deliver a speech but was denied a visa to enter the country. In a video chat, the Dalai Lama sharply criticized China and made fun of his own demonization. Tutu also spoke out in response, calling the current South African government “worse” than the apartheid regime because back then “at least you were expecting it.”
