U.S.-Canada Border

U.S. Considers Fences Along Border with Canada

The world's longest undefended border could soon become a little more defended.

American border officials are looking at installing fences, trenches, and other measures to make it more difficult for people to illegally cross the border between Canada and the U.S. The U.S. Customs and Border Protection Agency will hold public consultations to determine what will work best along the 6,400 or so kilometres of border that go unsupervised and undefended. As the border plans are still in the preliminary stages, there's no word on how big these fences would be, but the CBPA stresses that any additional security would "complement the natural landscape." What would complement the landscape even better is probably nothing at all, as that strategy has served both countries pretty well since the War of 1812. But they do say good fences make good neighbours. Just ask East and West Berlin.
