Facebook Set to Kill B.C. HST Protest Group

NO BC HST gets lost in the shuffle as Facebook decides which groups to upgrade and which groups should just die.

Facebook will soon "archive" one of the largest and most successful protest groups on the social-networking site, NO BC HST. Since May, Facebook has been archiving hundreds of less-active groups as it upgrades the network, meaning users will no longer be able to access those sites. But the creators of NO BC HST, which had some 125,000 followers and was instrumental in getting the harmonized sales tax repealed in British Columbia, are raising concerns over the fact that Facebook is unilaterally deciding which groups will be updated and which ones will be culled. As NO BC HST founder Bill Tieleman notes, another victim of the cull is "Barack Obama (One Million Strong for Barack)", whose more than 900,000 users suddenly can't access the network. We suppose this is what happens when we put too much faith in a private company that's beholden to few people beyond Mark Zuckerberg, but knowing B.C., this will probably lead to the creation of a new group to protest the killing of a protest group.
