Jellyfish Swarming Southern U.S. Coast

Adding to the million and one things wrong with Florida ...
Florida's beaches are getting taken over by jellyfish the size of dinner plates, with more and more of the slimy invertebrates washing up on the shores of the southern U.S., mostly due to overfishing. Moon jellyfish, which apparently have a weak sting but are still ugly as sin and would kill you if they could (don't you for a second think otherwise), are appearing in record numbers along the coast of Florida, Mississippi, Alabama, and Georgia. Marine biologists pin their growth on overfishing in those areas, as predatory fish usually keep the jellyfish population in check. Similar trends have also been noted in the Black and Bering seas as well. Call us crazy, but we've never heard of a better reason to curb overfishing than the fact that our love of seafood has led to the ocean's worst animal (yes, worse than the eel and the manatee) proliferating in record numbers.
