Opposition Calls for G8 Funding Review

To which the Tories respond by laughing, and laughing, then a "you're kidding, right?", then more laughing.
The opposition parties in the House of Commons want the Conservative government to carefully review the $50 million spent in cabinet minister Tony Clement's Ontario riding as part of the G8 summit. John McCallum, the Liberals' treasury board critic, challenged the Tories to be as open with the books as the Liberals were once the sponsorship scandal came to light in the early 2000s. Call us skeptics, but we really can't envision the prime minister calling a judicial inquiry into the G8 legacy fund. Of particular note are the funding documents originating from Clement's constituency office that weren't included in the auditor general's report on the spending. The documents indicated that Clement and a handful of local mayors decided on which projects in the riding would be funded, a process that appears to have skirted typical funding rules. McCallum has requested that the government operations parliamentary committee examine the matter, but due to the majority the Tories hold on that – and every – committee, it's entirely up to them whether they look into the mass waste of taxpayer money for gazebos or if they pretend like they did nothing wrong. They've done alright toeing that line so far, why bother changing now?
