The Israeli Ambassador has been evacuated after a violent attack on the Israeli embassy in Cairo.
An attack on the Israeli embassy in Cairo has left over 1,000 injured and three dead as Egypt-Israel relations turn from cold peace to outright hostility. Late Friday night, violent protestors tore down a security wall outside the Israeli building and stormed the embassy, cursing their ruling council, burning tires, and hurling rocks at the police and military. Embassy documents were thrown out the window as the building's flags were burned. Israel has since evacuated its ambassador Yitzhak Levanon and Egyptian prime minister Essam Sharaf has issued a state of alert. Tensions between Israel and Egypt have escalated since Mubarak’s ousting, especially following the death of five Egyptian border guards last month and accusations that Egypt was failing to protect its border with Israel. An Israeli official released a shocking statement in response, suggesting that perhaps the massive attack, protests, and burning of the Israeli embassy could point to weakened diplomatic ties between Israel and Egypt.
