Naheed Nenshi is the city's first mayor to serve as the Gay Pride Parade's grand marshal.
On Sunday, Calgary’s mayor Naheed Nenshi officially became the city’s first mayor to lead the Gay Pride Parade. In addition to being Canada’s first Muslim mayor, Nenshi created history yesterday by serving as the grand marshal for the first time in the parade's 20 year history. 15,000 people watched as Nenshi rode in with a red convertible wearing a purple shirt that said “Straight, not narrow.” He was presented with a rainbow cowboy hat and was cheered on by the crowd before a festival at Shaw Millennium Park. Nenshi is not the first political figure to lead the parade, following in the footsteps of former prime minister Joe Clark who was the marshal in 2001.
