Canadian doctors say boxing is unsafe for kids and teens.
The Canadian Paediatric Society (CPS) has asked pediatricians to recommend that children and teens stop boxing. In a joint policy statement with the American Academy of Pediatrics released today, CPS wrote that new evidence shows just how dangerous the sport can be. The doctors emphasize the risk of brain injury, concussion, and open wounds the sport can cause. Dr. Claire LeBlanc, the study’s Canadian co-author and apparent Postal 2 virgin, seems particularly concerned that the activity condones hitting people in the head. The team also warns that boxers are at risk of making dangerous choices in order to make a weight class. Though many boxing proponents argue that boxing causes fewer injuries than sports like hockey and football, this new medical policy guide is clear: Ideally, kids should stop punching each other in the head.
