As New York slowly recovers, hundreds of thousands in Canada are left without electricity.

Despite heavy constitutional protection and voting power, many Quebec residents felt powerless as 215,398 households were left without electricity Monday morning. The tropical storm version of Irene reached the province Sunday, with winds of up to 90 kilometers an hour (roughly the speed of most drivers on residential streets in Montreal) and extremely heavy rain. Outside of Quebec, Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, and Prince Edward Island also experienced strong winds and heavy rain, not that they were complaining. An estimated 53,000 people in New Brunswick and 17,000 in Nova Scotia lost power. Emergency crews are working to restore electricity as they assess the extent of the damage.
