'The most successful CEO of the last 25 years' steps down amid health concerns.
Steve Jobs, everyone's favourite geek, has resigned as CEO of Apple Inc. after guiding the iconic company to the summit of the business world. Jobs, 56, steps down from the company he co-founded in 1976 after battling pancreatic cancer that was first diagnosed in 2009. After a liver transplant earlier this year, Jobs essentially handed over control of day-to-day operations to his second-in-command, Tim Cook, who will now take over as CEO. Jobs' impact on the high tech industry simply can't be overstated: Starting with the Apple II waaaaay back in the late '70s, Jobs' innovative – and often ruthless – direction of the company saw it through thick and thin (except for when he resigned for about a decade in 1985), overseeing the release of such minor products as iMacs, iPods, iPhones, Macbooks, iPads, the iTunes store ... basically anything starting with a lower-case “i”. Oh, and on the way to doing so, he made Apple the most valuable company in the U.S., and, last week, for a brief moment, the most valuable company in the world. And yet, all through it, the guy still wore black turtlenecks.
