Wealthy People Build Lavish Libertarian Utopia

And you thought this would be about Kim Kardashian’s wedding.

Billionaire Peter Thiel, cofounder of PayPal and early investor in Facebook, is investing in his most sensible project yet: a lavish, rule-free sovereign island. The “Libertarian Utopia” will be built in international waters and will not be subject to international laws, morals, and most importantly, taxes. Thiel’s paradise is set to be built off the San Francisco coast next year with future plans to expand into settlements. The mogul told Details magazine that he got the idea from Patri Friedman, Milton Friedman’s grandson, who wanted to establish a sovereign nation to experiment with new forms of government. Friedman's utopia would not be plagued by things like welfare, weapons restrictions, or other unnecessary laws like safety regulations and building codes. Investors are hopeful that this creation will work out better than Giorgio Rosa's 1967 sovereign island, which was relatively successful before it was blown up by the Italian government.
