UN To Evacuate Foreigners in Tripoi

  • First Posted: Aug 19 2011 10:55 AM

A decisive showdown looms in the Libyan capital as rebel fighters inch closer every day.

The United Nations will begin evacuating foreigners in the Libyan capital of Tripoli within the next few days as the rebel's advance has cut off all highways from the city. Should the rebels get to Tripoli, they'll be met with stiff resistance from forces still loyal to Moammar Gadhafi, who has pledged to not leave Libya unless he's in a body bag (we hear numerous rebels would be glad to oblige him). While Tripoli has been targeted by deadly NATO airstrikes throughout their campaign, it has otherwise remained free of the fighting that engulfed the rest of the country, with thousands of Egyptians and other foreigners still living there. The UN says it will probably have to evacuate the city by boat.
