Assisted suicide advocates aren't out of luck just yet, with a second challenge set for November.
One of the two attempts in British Columbia to have assisted suicide legalized has been shot down by the province's Supreme Court. The Farewell Foundation for the Right to Die was ruled against in its constitutional challenge because anonymous people were listed in their case. Justice Lynn Smith said unnamed people can't challenge laws, which makes you think the Farewell Foundation should have thought about that beforehand. Either way, the organization has applied for intervener status at the upcoming hearing for Gloria Taylor's fight to legalize the right to die. Starting Nov. 15, the ALS patient from Kelowna, represented by the B.C. Civil Liberties Association, will argue in the provincial Supreme Court that the Criminal Code causes undue harm on those who wish to end their lives.
