Kenney Rips Amnesty International over Deportee List

The group that's done more to advance human rights around the world than almost any other institution raises the ire of the immigration minister.

Immigration Minister Jason Kenny has decided to put his considerable rhetorical skills to use in attacking Amnesty International, a human rights group, for its criticisms of the federal government's most-wanted list of suspected war criminals. Kenney, who wrote in a letter on his website that he was a member of the rights group in high school, said he was “disappointed” to find out Amnesty was “targeting one of the most generous immigration systems in the world, and protesting the actions of Canadian public servants applying rules and laws that far exceed our international obligations." It's those last four words that might provide some indication as to why Amnesty is up in arms over the deportee wanted list – as the group and many, many others have suggested, it's likely that many of these men will escape any form of prosecution for their alleged war crimes if deported, as they've never been charged, either in their home countries or in Canada. (We'll add that the list is also recklessly defamatory and exposes Ottawa to lawsuits up the wazoo if any of the men on it are found to be innocent.)
