Polygamist Leader Jeffs Jailed for Rest of Life

Since when did forcing children into marrying a middle-aged man in the name of God become a crime?

Warren Jeffs, the leader of a polygamist sect of Mormonism, has been sentenced to life in prison (Texas prison, no less) after being convicted of sexual assaults against two underage child brides. Jeffs, who heads the 10,000-member Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints (not to be confused with the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, a more mainstream form of Mormonism), had at least one child with the underage brides at his ranch in west Texas, where they were told that refusing Jeffs' advances amounted to going against the word of God. Jeffs had argued that the trial, which stemmed from a 2008 raid on his compound, had run roughshod over his freedom of religion, a claim easily countered by the fact that the guy was raping kids and telling them it was their holy duty to accept it. He's bound to have a grand old time dealing with hardened car thieves and drug dealers for the rest of his life in prison.
