The longer immigrants stay in Canada, the more likely they are to become obese, get diabetes, and suffer from heart disease.
Looks like Canada is slowly killing immigrants to this country: A new study shows that the longer immigrants live in this country, the greater their chances of developing a cardiovascular disease become. Researchers in Toronto looked at the health of immigrants who have lived in Ontario longer than 15 years, and of immigrants who have lived in the province for less than 15 years. For all ethnicities, there were higher incidences of diabetes, obesity, high blood pressure, and smoking – all indicators of eventual heart disease – in the long-term population than in the newly arrived segment. The results were most pronounced for Chinese immigrants, with diabetes being about twice as common among the group that had lived in Canada for 15+ years compared to the other. The researchers say it's probably tied to the adoption of Canadian eating habits (there ain't no poutine in Shaanxi province, that we know of), as obesity rates were 30-40 per cent higher among the long-term group.
