While it's no 1066, or 1666, or 1940, this is definitely shaping up to be one of the U.K.'s worst summers in recent years.
Rioters took to the streets of London for the third night in a row as unrest spread from the British capital to Birmingham, Liverpool, and Bristol. In London, riots have popped up in all kinds of neighbourhoods, not just the low-income, immigrant-heavy Tottenham area that first erupted into chaos on Saturday night after a peaceful protest marking the death of a man killed by police turned violent. Dozens of shop and restaurant windows have been smashed in even London's tonier neighbourhoods as the megacity's residents are left trying to figure out just why the riots have swept through the city (and now the country). Fires again claimed business in London's north end, including a furniture store dating back to 1867. In Bristol, Birmingham, and Liverpool, the damage has been less severe and widespread, although shop windows remain prime targets and there have been reports of looting as well.
