We hear antimatter belts are a great way to lose weight. Or power space travel. One of those two, at least.
A belt of antimatter particles that stretches around Earth has been discovered by a satellite, giving scientists their best chance to study the behaviour of mysterious antiprotons. The thin band is apparently made up of particles released when cosmic rays from the sun hit the molecules that make up the Earth's atmosphere, with the antimatter ending up together in a band surrounded by the two Van Allen belts, which attract matter such as protons and nuclei left over from the collisions. NASA scientists are working on spacecrafts powered by antimatter, and this discovery gives them a big source of antiprotons right near the planet, meaning the band could be used someday to fuel galactic space travel.
