Nunavut Retiring Polar Bear Licence Plates

Let us be the first to suggest the noble narwhal as the replacement.
Nunavut's iconic polar bear licence plates are on their way out, which is hopefully not an omen for the ever-decreasing populations of the massive mammals that roam the territory. The dies used to make the licence plates had worn down and needed upgrading, leading the Nunavut government to decide to hold a contest, open until Aug. 26, for a new plate design that reflects their Arctic environment. The polar bear plates, which are undoubtedly the coolest licence plates in North America, if not the world (not that there's a whole lot of competition for the honour), were first rolled out in the 1970s by the Northwest Territories. When Nunavut split in 1999, both territories kept the plates. The Northwest Territories will keep the polar bear design around (albeit in an updated form).
