The rights group Avaaz.org has released what they believe to be the toll wrought on Syrian civilians since their uprising began.

Nearly 3,000 Syrians have gone missing since the start of the uprising back in March, according to the online protest group Avaaz.org, with a person disappearing at the rate of once an hour. Avaaz reports that 2,918 Syrians have been abducted and remain missing, in addition to the more than 1,600 Syrians who have been killed by security forces loyal to President Bashar al-Assad. All told, 26,000 people have been detained at some point during the uprising, with more than 12,000 of those still in custody. Assad's Ba'athist party has recently signalled that it will allow the existence of other political parties in an attempt to subdue the ongoing protests, but the opposition has made it pretty clear they will accept nothing less than Assad's removal from power.
