Isn't having to play goalie for the Edmonton Oilers punishment enough?
Nikolai Khabibulin, the Edmonton Oilers goaltender convicted this week of drunk driving in Arizona, will serve 15 days at the infamous Tent City prison run by universally acknowledged hard-ass Sheriff Joe Arpaio. Khabibulin, who blew more than twice over the legal limit while speeding in his Ferrari (we've all been there), will have to shave his head, don pink boxers, and dress himself in the jail's black-and-white-striped jumpsuits while surviving the desert heat in un-airconditioned tents dating back to the Korean War. Tent City and Arpaio have brought international notoriety to Maricopa County for having just about the toughest penal system in the developed world. Considering how unevenly Khabibulin has played since winning the Stanley Cup with the Tampa Bay Lightning in 2004, though, maybe the tough love will do him some good. Or ruin him psychologically for the rest of his career. Both seem entirely possible.
