War Criminal

Stolen Painting Key in Hadzic's Arrest

The Croation Serb war criminal was arrested Wednesday after stolen art provided a clue to his whereabouts.

The capture of Croation Serb wartime leader Goran Hadzic may have been due to some shady art dealings. Serbia’s chief war crimes prosecutor Vladimir Vukcevic said the fugitive, who was wanted for crimes against humanity, was arrested this week after investigators found him trying to sell a stolen Modigliani painting. The artwork called “Portrait of Man” was discovered in the home of the 52-year-old's friend earlier this year. A cash-strapped Hadzic allegedly tried to sell the (possibly fake) painting after years on the run.
