The patron saint of the internet hits the century mark today. What we'd do to hear his thoughts on Twitter...
Marshall McLuhan would have turned 100 today had the famed academic, media theorizer, philosopher and punning champion still been alive. The University of Toronto professor had taught Renaissance and English literature before basically predicting that the internet would drastically alter our perceptions of privacy, communication, media, and business. McLuhan coined the phrases “the medium is the message” and “the global village” way back in the 1960s, launching the somewhat eccentric prof to a level of fame that most academics could only ever dream about. That pseudo-philosophers and students still get into hours-long debates over just what the “message” means goes a long way toward proving what an intellectual giant the man was. So here's to you on your centennial, Marshall. We're sure you'd have plenty to say about being memorialized in a paragraph on a thing called a “blog”.
