Calgary Breast-Implant Giveaway Picks Transgendered Musician

A controversial radio contest had a happy ending when a musician struggling to pay for her sex change was voted to win a new set of breasts.

The winner of a Calgary radio station's controversial breast-implant giveaway is a transgendered person who wouldn't have been able to afford the surgery otherwise. Voters overwhelmingly picked Avery, a musician from Calgary, to win the implants, as she picked up 76 per cent of 30,000 votes cast online. Amp Radio, the station that held the contest, had faced a stream over complaints that the contest was sexist, but the station rebutted that by saying some of the contestants included cancer patients who had lost breasts. Avery, however, proved to be the runaway favourite. Alberta stopped funding sex-reassignment surgery two years ago, forcing those who are undergoing the procedure to cover the costs. Avery said she was paying for hormone therapy herself, but would not have been able to cover the $10,000 needed for the operation.
