Forest Fires

Forest Fires Force 3,300 to Flee NW Ontario

There's "awww it's too hot to go out for an iced latte on Queen Street" hot and then there's "holy heck there are giant fires everywhere" hot.

If you thought it was hot in central Canada (and if so, quiet already, at least it's not -40), you've got nothing on northwest Ontario, where more than 100 forest fires have forced more than 3,000 people from their homes. Most of the evacuations have taken place on remote First Nations reserves, such as the Keewaywin First Nation some 600 kilometres northeast of Winnipeg. Some 3,300 people have been flown out of their communities to safer parts of the province, with another 1,000 expected to be airlifted tomorrow. Five times as much land has been burned by forest fires this as is typical for a summer in Ontario, with no signs of the fires letting up.
