Blue Jays To Retire Roberto Alomar's Jersey

The all-star second baseman will be the first player in Blue Jays' history to have his jersey retired.

Roberto Alomar, the Toronto Blue Jays' legendary second baseman, will be the first player to have his jersey retired by the club. Alomar, who picked up 10 Gold Gloves during his career, was an integral member of the back-to-back World Series-winning teams of 1992-93. His No. 12 jersey will be hung from the rafters of the SkyDome (we know it's the Rogers Centre, but come on) during a ceremony next Sunday before the Jays take on the Texas Rangers (Robbie Alomar bobbleheads will also be handed out to fans). The Puerto Rican native, along with slugger Joe Carter, joined the Jays in 1990 in a trade with the San Diego Padres. Upon his retirement in 2004, Alomar had established himself as one of the league's all-time greatest second basemen and one of its most consistent hitters. He was voted into the Hall of Fame in January of this year.
