Burned Parliament Building Excavated Under Old Montreal

And who says Canadians would rather bury their history instead of learn about it?

So, archaeologists are excavating the site of a burned-down Parliament building in Montreal, which apparently was just casually buried underground for well more than a century. The site of a parking lot since the 1920s, the building was burned to the ground in 1849 by English protesters who were outraged over a law that compensated people who took part in the failed 1837 Rebellion of Lower Canada. As the National Post points out, Canada has a history of having its parliament buildings burned down. In addition to the 1916 fire that torched the original ones in Ottawa, a replacement Parliament in Quebec City was burned in 1854, and, in 1813, rotten Americans razed the legislative assembly in York (now Toronto) during the War of 1812.
