The Japanese victory over the U.S. garnered double the tweets per second of last year's World Cup final.
The Women's World Cup final between the U.S. and Japan broke Twitter's record for most tweets per second, with some 7,196 tweets being sent every second as the two duelled in a shootout before Japan proved victorious. The Japanese side became the first-ever Asian team to win a World Cup, and prevented the vaunted U.S. team from winning its third. No. 2 on the tweets-a-second list? Paraguay's quarterfinal victory over Brazil in the Copa America soccer tournament, also on Sunday, with 7,166 tweets per second. For comparison's sake, the night Osama bin Laden was killed hit 5,106 per second, while the Super Bowl managed just 4,064.
